The federal baseline: EVAP
Wherever you are in Canada, the referral’s free 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial is the same. The government layer that changes is mostly federal now: the EVAP program (up to $5,000, Apr 1 2026 – Mar 31 2031, purchases eligible from Feb 16 2026) replaced the closed iZEV. Confirm Tesla’s eligibility under its transaction-value cap.
The two EVAP screens that actually disqualify people
Most Canadian coverage stops at “up to $5,000”. The amount is rarely the problem; eligibility is. Two screens do almost all the disqualifying, and both are things you can check before you configure rather than discover at the dealership.
- Where the vehicle was built. The vehicle must be manufactured in a country that has a free-trade agreement with Canada. This is the screen that excludes Chinese-built vehicles outright, and it matters for Teslas because the build location can differ by model and trim. It is not something to assume from the badge on the car — confirm the build market for the exact configuration you are ordering.
- The final transaction value cap. The rebate is gated on a final transaction value under $50,000 — and “final” is the word that costs people the money. Paint, wheels, towing packages and delivery charges all count toward it. A configuration that clears the cap in its base form can fail once options are added, which means the cap is effectively a trim decision worth up to $5,000. Check the configurator total, never the advertised starting price.
The rebate shrinks every year — waiting costs money
EVAP is designed to taper: reported at $5,000 for 2026, then stepping down to $4,000, then $3,000, and lower toward the end of the program. Set against a referral benefit that is a three-month software trial, the arithmetic is stark — a delivery that slips into the next calendar year can cost you roughly $1,000, which is several times what the referral is worth. If you are weighing a delivery window, weigh it on the rebate, not on the code.

The two screens fail at different moments — one is a lookup, one is a choice
Worth separating, because they need different actions from you and at different times. The manufacturing screen is a property of the individual vehicle: it is already true or false before you touch the configurator, and no decision of yours changes it. The transaction-value screen is the opposite — it is decided by what you configure, so it is a choice you are actively making while you click.
- The manufacturing screen is a per-vehicle question, not a per-model one. A model name does not answer it, because the same model can be built in more than one country. So the thing to establish is where the specific car you are being offered was built — a question for Tesla about that vehicle, answerable before you commit.
- The value screen is where an option can disqualify you. If a cap applies, the last item you add can cost its own price plus the entire rebate — which makes it the most expensive click in the process, and the only one on this page you control completely.
Practical order, then: settle the vehicle question first, because it is free to ask and can rule out a car entirely; then configure with the cap in view. Doing it the other way round means falling in love with a build before finding out the car was never eligible.
Why the referral is the only line on this page with no eligibility screen
Set the two layers side by side and the asymmetry is the useful part. The federal rebate asks where the car was built, what it costs as configured, and which programme window your purchase falls in. The referral asks one thing: was a valid link opened before you configured.
It has no manufacturing condition, no price cap, no income test, no budget that can run out and no provincial variation on the buyer side. That is why it is the smallest number in this comparison and also the only one you can be certain of before you order — and why we keep it in a separate column rather than folding it into a single total that would inherit every one of the rebate’s conditions.
