Ordering Late in the Year in Canada: Which Calendar Year the Cap Counts

The cap runs on the calendar year; the clock runs from the Grant Date. Around New Year those two boundaries do not line up.

Three dates attach to a Canadian referral and people conflate all three: the order date, the delivery date, and the Grant Date. Only the last one governs the cap and the expiry, which is why a December order can behave like a January referral.

The two boundaries

The cap: only the first ten successful referrals in a calendar year pay the referrer, and the counter resets on 1 January. The expiry: Tesla Credits run twelve months from the Grant Date.

Where the Grant Date falls

After settlement, which follows delivery. So a December order delivered in January settles in the new year, and a referral counts when it succeeds rather than when the order was placed. On the ordinary reading that makes it a new-year referral: a new-year slot, and a clock starting in January.

This desk will not present that as a published rule, because Tesla has not published one at this level of detail. What is documented is the shape — the cap counts successful referrals per calendar year, and success arrives at the grant. The app shows a date next to a balance, and that date is the answer for your account.

Who this actually affects

Two narrow groups. A referrer at or near ten in December, for whom a January settlement is good news because it does not consume an exhausted allowance. And a referrer with slots to spare in December, for whom those slots expire with the year and are not rescued by a January settlement. Everyone referring one or two people a year can ignore this page.

Why you cannot manage it by timing the order

Because nobody controls the Grant Date. It follows settlement, which follows delivery, which follows production and logistics — and Canadian delivery windows have been long enough that a December order landing in the new year is unremarkable. Advice to order in a particular week to land a grant in a particular year is describing a variable it cannot control.

What is controllable, and worth more

Whether the referral is attached at all. That is decided before configuration, cannot be added afterwards, and is visible only on the order summary before payment. Optimise the thing you control.

The expiry side of the boundary

An early-January grant is the friendliest timing for a referrer: twelve months of credit life runs almost to the following year end. A late-December grant is the same reward with the least convenient calendar. Either way the 30-day warning email is the last prompt, and a further successful referral extends the whole balance to twelve months from the newest Grant Date.

The buyer's side of a year-boundary order

Unaffected. The three-month FSD trial starts when the car is delivered and runs from there, and it converts to a paid subscription at the end unless cancelled — a date worth diarising regardless of which side of New Year the order fell.
