Two Clocks on a Canadian Referral Reward

Credits run twelve months, charging distance runs six, and the Grant Date — not the order date — starts both.

Two deadlines govern referral rewards and almost every page quotes only one. For a Canadian account the distinction matters in a specific way: the buyer's benefit is a trial with an end date, while the referrer's is a balance with an expiry.

The two clocks

Tesla Credits expire 12 months from the Grant Date. Supercharging distance expires 6 months from the Grant Date. The Grant Date is when Tesla posts the reward to an account — not the day the order was placed, and not delivery day.

Which one a Canadian holds

A referred Canadian buyer receives three months of FSD (Supervised): a trial window rather than a balance. A Canadian referrer receives Tesla Credits, on the twelve-month clock. Charging distance is the European reward shape and does not apply to a Canadian order — which is why a page quoting free Supercharging kilometres to a Canadian buyer is describing another market.

Why the pending period costs nothing

Between the order and the Grant Date the app shows the referral as pending. Nothing is spendable, and nothing should be: every clock starts at the grant. A referral pending for weeks has lost nobody anything, which is the opposite of how the word reads.

The trial's deadline behaves differently

Since 14 February 2026 there is no one-time FSD purchase in North America, only a monthly subscription. That makes the buyer's benefit a free trial of a recurring bill: doing nothing at the end of month three starts a charge rather than returning you to neutral. Write the end date down on the day it starts, and manage it in the Self-Driving app that shipped on AI4 cars in spring 2026.

The one mechanism that moves a deadline

Earning again. A further successful referral extends all credits in an account to 12 months from the newest Grant Date — the whole balance moves, not just the new portion. It applies to a referrer's credits and not to a buyer's trial.

What the warning email is

A deadline, not a notification. Tesla emails 30 days before a balance lapses, and credits cannot be reissued once expired — so there is no conversation available afterwards.

What credits can become

They are redeemed through the Loot Box, and redemptions are final. Documented limits: no cash, no transfers, no reissues, not valid for gift cards or alcohol. Whether Tesla Shop merchandise is redeemable is genuinely disputed between reliable sources, so read what your own Loot Box offers rather than trusting any page.
