Is a Referral Credit Taxable in Canada? The Mechanism, and Where to Check

Not advice. What the object actually is, why a business account differs from a personal one, and the guidance to bring to an accountant.

Disclosure: referral links use rel="nofollow sponsored". Opening one may earn the code’s owner Tesla Credits; it costs you nothing. We are not affiliated with Tesla, Inc.

Not advice, and this desk is not an accountant. What follows is organised the way the conversation actually goes: the questions a Canadian accountant will ask you about a referral credit, and what the programme's own documentation says about each. Bring the answers rather than the question.

Question 1: what exactly did you receive?

The single most common misunderstanding is answered here. If you were the buyer, you received three months of FSD (Supervised) — a service applied to a vehicle, with no money moving in either direction and no change to the purchase price. If you were the referrer, you received Tesla Credits: a balance on a Tesla account.

Question 2: could it ever have become money?

On the documentation, no. Credits cannot be redeemed for cash, cannot be transferred to another person or account, cannot be reissued, and are not valid for gift cards. Redemption runs through the Loot Box and is final. Whether Tesla Shop merchandise is redeemable is disputed between otherwise reliable sources, and this desk does not resolve it.

That matters to the conversation because a non-transferable credit with no cash conversion is a different object from a rebate cheque, and the difference is the first thing worth putting on the table.

Question 3: in what capacity did you receive it?

Personally, or in the course of a business. Broadly — a shape rather than a ruling — amounts arising in the course of a business are treated differently from occasional personal receipts, and a business receiving something of value connected to its activities has reporting considerations an individual sharing a link with a friend generally does not. If you run a channel, a site or any operation that monetises referrals, this is the question that changes the answer.

Question 4: is there any GST/HST angle?

A fair question to raise and the wrong page to answer it. It turns on whether anything was supplied for consideration, which is exactly the kind of characterisation a professional makes on the facts. This desk flags it as a question worth asking rather than one worth guessing at, and notes that a non-cash, non-transferable credit is an unusual fact pattern to reason about casually.

Question 5: does the province change anything?

Provincial income tax generally follows the federal characterisation, but filing questions — Québec's separate return in particular — belong with an adviser in that province. Canada's referral programme also has two documented provincial differences worth mentioning in the same conversation: British Columbia's referrer earns no reward at all, and Québec's demo-drive credit is not offered.

What to read before the meeting

Canada Revenue Agency guidance on what constitutes income, and its guidance on business income, in preference to any third-party summary including this one. Alongside them, Tesla's own Refer and Earn terms, which describe the credit and its limits — that combination is the input an accountant will want and the reason the questions above are answerable at all.

What most readers actually need

If you referred one or two friends and hold a small expiring balance you intend to spend on Supercharging, the five questions above resolve quickly and the object is modest by construction: capped at ten successful referrals a calendar year, expiring twelve months from the Grant Date, and unusable outside the Tesla ecosystem. Understanding that is usually the whole of what was wanted.

The one thing this page will not do

Tell you a treatment. A referral site asserting a tax outcome is asserting something it cannot know about your situation, and in a year when this programme changed five times, confidence is the least reliable signal on any page — including a page about tax.
