A First-Time Buyer's Checklist for the Tesla Referral Code in Canada

Most referral mistakes happen before checkout even starts. This is the five-minute checklist to get right first.

1. Confirm your model is actually eligible

Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck qualify for the referral’s 3-month free FSD (Supervised) trial. Model S and Model X do not — they were removed from the Canadian program in March 2026. If you are cross-shopping an S or X against a 3 or Y, the referral difference alone is worth factoring in.

2. Open the code or link before you touch the configurator

This is the step first-time buyers miss most often. The referral has to be active in your session before you place the order — tap “Open at Tesla” above, or copy the code and keep it handy, then start configuring. Tesla generally will not add a referral to an order that was started without one.

3. Know your province’s exceptions before you order

The buyer benefit is identical everywhere in Canada, but the referrer side is not, and that changes what your referral is actually worth to the person who shared their code with you:

Québec · British Columbia · Ontario · Rest of Canada

4. Understand what you are actually getting

It is not a discount. It is a 3-month trial of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), applied automatically after delivery. If you had no intention of ever trying FSD, weigh that honestly — the benefit is real, but it is a service credit, not cash off the price.

5. Save the order-summary confirmation

Before you pay, the order summary should show the FSD (Supervised) trial line. Screenshot it. If a delivery date slips or a detail gets disputed later, that confirmation is the easiest way to show the referral was attached at order time.

A first-time buyer’s worked example

Say a first-time buyer in Alberta configures a Model Y in July 2026, using a friend’s referral code opened before the build page loaded. The buyer gets the 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial automatically after delivery. The friend, as referrer, earns up to C$325 in Tesla Credits — C$650 if the buyer also adds FSD (Supervised) outright — with no BC- or Québec-style exclusion, since Alberta carries none of those carve-outs. On the government side, Alberta has no dedicated provincial EV purchase rebate that we have verified, so the federal EVAP (up to $5,000, for purchases eligible from February 16, 2026) is the incentive layer worth checking, separately from the referral.
