What Actually Happens on Delivery Day With a Tesla Referral Code
The referral you see at order time and the referral you get at delivery are two different moments. Here's what changes between them.

Order day and delivery day are two different moments
The order summary shows the FSD (Supervised) trial line before you pay — that's confirmation the referral was recognized, not the benefit turning on. Nothing about the referral actually activates at order time. It activates at delivery.

3 mo free FSDWhat happens in the car, the day you take delivery
Once delivery is finalized, the 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial appears in the vehicle's own software menu automatically. There's no separate email, no code to redeem inside the car, no action required from you beyond taking delivery itself.
What happens in the referrer's account, the same week
The referrer's Tesla Credits are tied to the vehicle actually being delivered — not to the order being placed. That means a referrer shouldn't expect to see anything land the day the order goes in; the credit is keyed to your delivery date, and typically shows up in their account in the period following it.
If your delivery date slips
Everything downstream of delivery slips with it — the trial's activation date and the referrer's credit timing both move to match the actual delivery, not the original estimate. This is a mechanical consequence of both being delivery-triggered, not order-triggered; it isn't a sign the referral has failed.
A delivery-day checklist
- Before you leave the delivery center: check the car's software menu for the FSD (Supervised) trial — it should be visible the same day.
- Screenshot your original order-summary confirmation showing the referral line, in case a discrepancy comes up later.
- If you're the referrer: watch your own Tesla account in the period after the buyer's delivery date, not their order date.
- If either side is missing a reasonable time after delivery, raise it directly with Tesla rather than assuming the referral silently failed.
Why this distinction matters
Buyers sometimes assume a delayed delivery means a lost referral. It doesn't — the referral was locked in at order time; only its activation timing rides on your delivery date. Understanding that separation is the difference between a calm wait and an unnecessary support ticket.
How this differs from a coupon-style promotion
If you're used to a retail promo code that discounts a price at checkout, the referral's delivery-day mechanic can feel unfamiliar. There is no line-item price drop to see anywhere, at order or at delivery — the whole benefit is a service credit (the FSD trial) that shows up inside the car's own menu, plus a separate Tesla Credits balance for the referrer that shows up in their account, not on any invoice. Looking for a dollar figure to subtract from the purchase price is the wrong mental model for this specific program.
Does the province you take delivery in change any of this?
The delivery-day mechanics themselves — trial in the car, credit in the referrer's account, both keyed to the actual delivery date — are identical nationwide. What differs by province is whether the referrer's account shows anything at all: British Columbia's referrer exclusion and Québec's missing C$20 demo-drive credit are the two structural exceptions, and neither one is a delivery-day timing issue — they're program rules that apply regardless of when delivery happens.
