Four Questions That Decide What Your Tesla Referral Actually Pays

The rules aren't one policy — they're four separate switches. Here's how to read your own combination.

One policy, four separate switches

“The Tesla referral program” reads like a single set of rules, but what you personally receive is decided by four separate questions, each with its own answer. Get any one of them wrong and the figure you expect won’t match the one that actually posts to your account. Here they are, in the order worth answering them.

1. 1. Which vehicle?

   Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck are referral-eligible; Model S and Model X were removed from the Canadian program entirely in March 2026. This one question already rules out any buyer benefit for two of Tesla’s current models, regardless of the other three answers.

2. 2. Which province?

   The buyer’s 3-month FSD (Supervised) trial is identical everywhere. The referrer side is not: Québec excludes only the separate C$20 FSD demo-drive credit; British Columbia excludes the referrer reward entirely, on any referral type; the rest of Canada carries no exclusions at all.

3. 3. Are you the buyer or the referrer?

   The same order produces two different answers depending which side of the code you’re asking about. A buyer’s question is “do I get the FSD trial?” A referrer’s question is “do I get Tesla Credits?” — and question 2 above only affects the second one.

4. 4. Does your order straddle the March 2026 cutover?

   If your order date and delivery date fall on opposite sides of the Model S/X removal, which rule applies isn’t always obvious from the order summary alone — that’s specific enough to need its own dedicated check, which we cover separately below.

Combining the answers: four short scenarios

The four questions interact, which is where most confusion actually happens. A few combinations, worked through quickly:

• Ontario, Model 3, buyer, ordered mid-2026 — full stack applies on both sides: the buyer gets the FSD trial, and their referrer gets up to C$325 or C$650, no exclusions.
• British Columbia, Cybertruck, referrer — the buyer still gets the FSD trial (question 1 says yes), but the referrer earns nothing at all (question 2’s BC exclusion overrides everything else).
• Québec, Model Y, referrer who did an FSD demo drive rather than a full sale — the vehicle-purchase referral pays normally if a sale follows, but the separate C$20 demo-drive credit specifically is not available in Québec.
• Model S ordered in February 2026 but delivered in April 2026 — question 4 is the one that actually decides this case, and it needs the dedicated cutover check rather than a guess.

Why this is worth doing as a checklist, not a memorized rule

Most third-party pages state the program as one rule set and let readers assume it applies uniformly. It doesn’t — two of the four questions above (province, and order/delivery timing) can each independently zero out a reward that the other two questions said you’d get. Running all four, in order, is the only way to know your actual outcome rather than the general one.
