The Four-Session Test: Does Tesla's Charging Membership Pay for Itself?

Not a yes/no answer — a formula. Here's how to run it with your own numbers before you sign up.

Why “does it pay off” isn’t a yes/no question

Tesla’s reported Charging Membership — $12.99 a month in US-facing coverage, with a commonly cited breakeven around four or more Supercharging sessions a month — shows up on this site because a referrer’s Tesla Credits can be spent on it. But whether it’s worth paying for isn’t a fact anyone can state for you: it depends on how often you actually Supercharge and what your local per-kWh rate looks like, and that second number already varies by province because provincial electricity costs differ. What follows is the method for answering it with your own numbers, not ours.

The formula, in one line

A membership pays off when the money it saves you across a month’s Supercharging exceeds what it costs. That’s: (per-kWh saving) × (kWh you actually add per session) × (sessions per month), compared against the membership’s confirmed price on your own account. Everything below is just that formula, broken into steps you can run yourself.

1. Find your confirmed CAD price first

   The $12.99 figure circulating online is US-facing reporting. Check your Tesla account or app for the actual Canadian-dollar price before running any other step — the whole calculation is pointless against an unconfirmed number.

2. Read the live per-kWh rate at a stall you actually use

   Open the charging screen at the Supercharger you’d normally stop at, not a number from a search result — rates already differ by province, and sometimes by stall, because local electricity costs differ.

3. Note the membership discount separately from the base rate

   The app should show what a membership would shave off that specific stall’s rate. That gap — not the sticker rate — is your per-kWh saving.

4. Check how many kWh you add per typical stop

   Glance at the charging screen at the end of a normal session. A quick top-up and a near-empty-to-full session add very different amounts, so use a session that matches your actual habits, not your best or worst one.

5. Multiply, then multiply again

   Per-kWh saving × kWh per session gives you the saving per stop. Multiply that by how many times a month you genuinely Supercharge — not how often you think you should.

6. Compare the total against your confirmed fee — and recheck in a few months

   Supercharger pricing moves with demand and local electricity costs, so a break-even that holds in August isn’t guaranteed to hold in December.

Running the formula: an illustrative pass, not a Canadian rate

To show the mechanics rather than assert a real number, say the discount works out to $0.05 per kWh saved, and a typical stop adds 50 kWh — both chosen only to illustrate the formula, not confirmed Canadian figures. That’s $2.50 saved per stop. The table below runs that illustrative saving across a few session counts.

The number we won’t guess for you

We haven’t seen the Charging Membership’s price confirmed in CAD on tesla.com/en_ca, and per-kWh Supercharging pricing already varies by province. Treat every dollar figure above except the confirmed fee on your own account as illustrative — the formula is the reusable part, not any specific number in it.
