The Charging Membership Fine Print for a Just-Delivered Referral Buyer

Your referral code got you the FSD trial. It didn't touch what Supercharging costs going forward — here's the distinction new buyers miss.

A different reader than our last Supercharger post

Our earlier post on the reported $12.99/month Charging Membership was written for referrers sitting on Tesla Credits, asking whether that balance offsets the fee. This one is for the other side of the same referral code: someone who just used one to order, and is about to take delivery. The fine print that trips up first-time buyers here isn't about credits at all — it's a mix-up between what the referral actually gives you and what this new membership costs.

What your referral code actually got you

If you ordered with a referral code, the benefit you receive as the buyer is the 3-month free FSD (Supervised) trial on Model 3, Model Y or Cybertruck — activated automatically after delivery, no coupon required. That's the entire buyer-side benefit. The referrer — whoever's code you used — is the one who earns Tesla Credits, up to C$325 or C$650 if you added FSD to your order. As the buyer, you don't receive Tesla Credits yourself just for using someone's code; that reward structure runs one direction, and it's worth being clear on before delivery day so you're not expecting a credit that was never yours to begin with.

Where the paid membership fits in — a cost, not a perk

Tesla's Supercharger network — reported at over 60,000 stalls across North America, with full Model Y access — is free to use at the standard per-kWh rate with no membership at all. The reported $12.99/month Charging Membership is a separate, optional, ongoing cost that lowers that per-kWh rate, with a breakeven reported around four or more Supercharging sessions a month. Nothing about the referral program requires it, offers it, or discounts it. It's simply a new line item a first-time buyer should know about before their first charging stop, entirely apart from anything the referral code touched.

The Canadian caveat, again worth repeating here

The $12.99 figure is U.S.-facing reporting; we haven't seen it confirmed in CAD on tesla.com/en_ca, and Supercharger per-kWh pricing already varies by province because provincial electricity rates differ. Before your first delivery-week Supercharge stop, check the in-app rate at your usual charging locations and decide whether a membership — if and when it's offered at a confirmed Canadian price — is worth it for your own charging habits, rather than assuming the U.S. figure applies directly.

A short delivery-week checklist

• Confirm your FSD (Supervised) trial shows in your account after delivery — that's the referral benefit you're actually owed as a buyer.
• Don't expect a Tesla Credit yourself for using a referral code — that reward belongs to whoever's code it was.
• Check your in-app per-kWh Supercharging rate before deciding whether a paid membership, once confirmed for Canada, makes sense for how often you'll actually charge on the road.
