What a Tesla Referral Code Actually Is, Traced Through One Order

Why this gets misread as a coupon code

Search “Tesla referral code” and you’ll land on pages that borrow the language of retail coupons — enter it at checkout for a percentage off, or a loyalty number Tesla mails to existing owners, or a VIN-specific unlock some resale marketplaces use for reserved builds. None of those descriptions matches what a Tesla referral code actually does. Here it is traced through one real order, step by step, instead of defined from a lookup table.

The one-line version

A Tesla referral code is another owner’s personal link. Opening it before you configure attaches it to your session, so a benefit — currently 3 months of free FSD (Supervised) on Model 3, Model Y and Cybertruck — shows up automatically in your order summary once your car is delivered. The sticker price never moves, and there’s no discount field to type it into.

Traced through one order

  1. Open the link before you configure

    A code opened after you’ve already started an order generally won’t attach — this is the one step that has to happen first, not partway through.

  2. Configure and place the order normally

    Nothing about the price changes at this stage. If a page is telling you to look for a percentage removed from the total, it’s describing a coupon, not this.

  3. Check the order summary before paying

    The FSD (Supervised) trial should already be listed if the code attached correctly — we walk through exactly where it appears in our how-to-apply guide, linked below.

  4. The trial activates at delivery, not at order

    The benefit you saw in the order summary is confirmed, not spent, until the car is actually handed over.

  5. Separately, the referring owner becomes eligible for Tesla Credits

    Up to C$325, or C$650 if you added FSD, once your order completes — subject to the province rules on our homepage. That reward belongs to them, not to you, and it’s the other half of what the same code does.
