Tesla's March 2026 Program Overhaul: What's New for Canadians

Two details from the same overhaul didn't make our first pass: a 12-month credit expiry, and a loyalty-discount cut. Here's why the expiry clock matters more here.

We have already walked through the core of Tesla's March 2026 referral overhaul: Model S and Model X dropped from the Canadian program, the referrer reward holding at up to C$325 (C$650 with FSD added), full detail in our what-changed post. Two pieces of that same overhaul did not make it into that post, and both matter more in Canada than the headline change does.

The detail that wasn't public before: a 12-month expiry

Per Tesla's own referral-and-earn page and Teslarati's coverage of the overhaul, referral and loyalty credits now expire 12 months after their Grant Date. That is a genuinely new constraint — nothing on this site's existing coverage of the March 2026 changes mentioned an expiry clock, because the overhaul's public messaging led with the eligible-model change, not the credit timeline.

Why the expiry clock bites harder in Canada

Canadian order-to-delivery timelines can run long, especially outside major delivery hubs, and our own pipeline breakdown treats the order-to-delivery gap as the single longest stage in the whole process. A referrer whose Tesla Credit is granted at one point and who does not spend it — on Supercharging, upgrades or merch — within 12 months risks losing it outright. If you are a referrer sitting on an unspent credit from a referral several months old, checking its Grant Date against today's date is now a genuinely useful five-minute task, not a formality.

The loyalty discount cut: a different program, worth knowing anyway

Separately, Tesla's loyalty discount for existing owners buying a new premium vehicle was cut from $1,000 to $500 as part of the same overhaul. This is not the referral program — it is a separate repeat-buyer incentive — but the two are easy to conflate, and an existing Canadian owner weighing a trade-up should know both figures rather than assuming referral math applies to a loyalty purchase, or vice versa. We have not seen a province-specific exclusion reported for the loyalty discount the way BC and Québec carry referral-specific exclusions (§ our BC and Québec pages); treat the loyalty figure as national until confirmed otherwise.

What to do with this if you are a Canadian referrer right now

• Check the Grant Date on any Tesla Credit balance you're holding — 12 months from that date, per the current rule, it may lapse.
• If you're mid-delivery-wait on a referral you already completed, don't assume the credit is safe indefinitely once it lands — plan to spend it within the year.
• If you're an existing owner considering a repeat purchase, price the $500 loyalty discount separately from any referral reward — the two do not combine into one number.
